Unknown Quantity: Regulating Radionuclides in Tap Water

چکیده

Exposure to naturally occurring and man-made radionuclides can occur through drinking water or via inhalation or dermal pathways while showering or during other contact with the water. R adioactivity surrounds us; each day we are exposed to a certain amount by virtue of being alive on planet Earth. Some of this exposure comes from radioactive substances (radionuclides) that occur naturally in a wide variety of geologic and soil formations. Occasionally these naturally occurring substances become more concentrated or accessible through human activities such as mining and nuclear energy production, resulting in greater potential for exposure than their original natural occurrence would suggest. Other radionuclides are artificially created. Residents in almost all parts of the United States live on lands that contain minor to substantial concentrations of radionuclides of one type or another. These substances often make their way into tap water, leading to exposures by ingestion, inhalation, or dermal pathways during showering or other contact with the water.

ABSTRACT: In april 1986 nuclear accident of Chernobyl's reactor (Unit.No4) released a significant amounts (50 Mci) of highly dangerous radioactive materials into the atmosphere. Undoubtedly, some of these radionuclides have long lives and can contaminate the environment for,far distances Thus, it is highly important to measure presence of radionuclides in air ,water soil and agriculture product...

Evaluation of retention and excretion function to members of the public for chronic intakes of radionuclides

The Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident resulted in a release of radionuclides to the environment and a wide range of radioactive contamination. The national government and local governments implemented urgent protective actions to reduce internal exposure from ingestion of food and tap water or inhalation of radionuclides after the accident. There has been some concern in evaluatin...

Removal of Chlorine Residual in Tap Water by Boiling or Adding Ascorbic Acid

Society’s preference for bottled water mainly comes from a dislike of the mildly pungent taste and odor of tap water. Such odor and taste may be caused by chlorine residual (in the form of free chlorine or chloramines), which is maintained in a water distribution system to prevent regrowth of microorganisms and is thus present in tap water. To encourage individuals who drink bottled water to sh...

Natural Radioactivity Level of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K Radionuclides in Drinking Water of Residential Areas in Kermanshah Province, Iran using Gamma Spectroscopy

Introduction: Human has always been exposed to background ionizing radiation. Interaction between ionizing radiation and the biological system can lead to changes in cells or tissues inducing diseases, such as cancer. With this background in mind, this experimental study aimed to evaluate the specific activity of water radionuclides in Kermanshah province, western region of Iran. Material and M...
